Indian Pilot Hailed Hero After Mid-Air Attack - mid-air attack
Captain Smit Machchhar fought off a mid-air attack on flydubai Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

The incident occurred on Flight FZ1073, traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, which was forced into a sharp descent before landing safely in Saudi Arabia. Machchhar, despite sustaining serious injuries, played a key role in preventing a potential disaster by resisting the attacker and enabling passengers and crew to intervene.

A mid-air struggle and emergency landing

The flight, carrying 174 passengers, including 27 children, took a dramatic turn when a fight broke out in the cockpit. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that one pilot stabbed the other and allegedly attempted to crash the aircraft. The aircraft, cruising at 34,000 feet, began losing altitude sharply, dropping 14,000 feet in less than a minute. Passengers reported hearing screams and seeing blood near the cockpit door. The flight transmitted emergency signals, indicating possible unlawful interference, and was eventually diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. Machchhar’s actions in opening the cockpit door allowed others to overpower the attacker, ensuring the safety of all on board.

A seasoned pilot with a heroic response

Machchhar, a commercial pilot for over 13 years, joined flydubai in 2022 as a direct-entry captain after an 11-year stint at SpiceJet. During his time at SpiceJet, he also held the position of Senior Commander. At flydubai, he has spent the past four years flying the airline’s Boeing 737 fleet and is based in Dubai. His extensive experience and training were key in his ability to handle the mid-air crisis effectively.

Aftermath and recognition

All 174 passengers survived the incident, and Machchhar was hospitalized in Tabuk, where he was reported to be in stable condition. His brother, who recently joined flydubai, was not on the flight. The incident has highlighted the critical role of pilots in ensuring passenger safety, with Machchhar’s quick thinking and bravery playing a key role in preventing a potential disaster. His actions have not only saved lives but also reinforced the importance of training and preparedness in aviation. The aviation community and global leaders have lauded his heroism, setting a benchmark for professionalism and courage in the face of extreme adversity.
