Weight-loss injections like Mounjaro and Wegovy require long-term use, but costs differ by thousands of pounds depending on the provider. Patients may pay up to £3,700 more over an 18-month treatment if they don’t compare prices.
The hidden price gap in weight-loss jabs
Both medications are available through the NHS, though access is restricted. Most patients qualify only with a BMI of 40 or higher. Those with a BMI of 30 or above can still obtain them privately, but expenses accumulate.
An 18-month course of Mounjaro costs around £5,360 on average, while Wegovy averages £3,555. Prices vary significantly between pharmacies. Dotor, an online provider, charges £4,656 for a 76-week Mounjaro plan. Treated UK lists the same course at £8,069, a 53% increase.
Wegovy prices also differ. Medicine Market Place offers the lowest rate at £2,418, while AJ Hill Aesthetics charges £6,144 for identical treatment. The gap amounts to £3,726.

Robert Price, who founded the weight-loss drug information site SlimrChat, explains that competition among pharmacies causes these fluctuations. “Competition is fierce because this is a valuable audience to have. So there are huge variances in price.”
How pharmacies obscure the real cost
Many online pharmacies don’t reveal the full price immediately. Patients first undergo a consultation where a prescriber reviews their health. After approval, some only display the cost of the initial dose, concealing that prices often rise as dosages increase.
A 0.25mg dose of Wegovy might be listed at £70, but the total for an 18-month plan isn’t always visible. Price created a free calculator on SlimrChat to help users estimate expenses. The tool monitors prices from over 100 UK pharmacies, updating twice weekly.
Changing providers isn’t simple. Patients must complete another consultation, providing details like current dosage and medical history. All pharmacies in the calculator are UK-registered and meet General Pharmaceutical Council standards.
Why introductory discounts can backfire
Pharmacies frequently attract customers with first-order discounts, such as 10% off or £100 reductions. These offers can be deceptive. One provider gives £40 off the first Mounjaro order, yet its long-term pricing exceeds competitors.

“It seems appealing,” Price noted. “But those pharmacies are often the most expensive, so patients could pay over £100 more by the end of treatment.”
Some pharmacies also promote referral bonuses or switching discounts, but Price recommends focusing on the total cost. “Look at the full plan, not just initial savings,” he advised.
The market may become more competitive. Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of Mounjaro, plans to release a weight-loss pill by year’s end, which could affect pricing.
Until then, patients who don’t compare options may spend far more than needed for the same medication. Those seeking private treatment should verify total expenses before committing.
