How to File ITR Online: A Step-by-Step Guide

Indian taxpayers must file their income tax return by a defined deadline each year, provided they earn above a specific threshold. Filing this form is not just a legal requirement; it allows individuals to claim a refund if they overpaid taxes and provides necessary income verification for loans, visas, or government jobs. First-time filers need to register on the e-Filing portal before they can access the site’s services.

To begin, visit the official e-Filing portal homepage and click Register. Enter your PAN under the Register as a Taxpayer option and click Validate. If the PAN is already registered or invalid, an error message will appear. Once the PAN is validated, you must fill out the Basic Details page with your name, date of birth or incorporation date, gender, and residential status as reflected in the PAN. Click Continue to proceed to the Contact Details page.

On the Contact Details page, enter your Primary Mobile Number, Email ID, and Address. Click Continue to proceed. The system will then send two separate OTPs to your primary mobile number and email ID. You must enter these 6-digit codes, which are valid for 15 minutes only. You have three attempts to enter the correct code, and a countdown timer indicates when the OTP will expire. Clicking Resend OTP generates a new code. After entering the details, confirm the information and proceed to the Set Password page.

Choose a password and enter it in both the Set Password and Confirm Password textboxes. Next, enter a personalized message and click Register. Once successfully registered, click Proceed to Login to begin the process. The ability to update your profile and file returns is now available.

Steps to file the return

Log in to the website using your credentials. Handle to the filing section to enter the required details, select the mode of filing, and choose your status. You must then select the appropriate ITR form for your income type. Verify that the information is correct and proceed to the summary of tax computation. The system will then guide you through validation and finally, submission of the return.

For many taxpayers, the process is straightforward, but the system can be unforgiving if a minor detail is incorrect. A single mismatched digit in the residential status or an unverified mobile number can stall the entire workflow. This often forces users to restart the registration or filing process from the beginning, adding unnecessary stress during the busy filing season. Officials recommend keeping all contact details current to avoid these technical interruptions.
