Discounts lure Aussies, loyalty wanes amid rising deals - consumer loyalty
91% of Australian consumers have switched brands for better offers, according to a Shop ANZ and Vypr report.

Australian consumers are increasingly enticed by discounts, but their loyalty to retailers is waning. A report by Shop ANZ and Vypr reveals that 91% of consumers have switched brands for better offers, while 79% have visited different retailers for promotions.

Vypr’s chief revenue officer Sam Gilding notes that loyalty can no longer be assumed. He emphasizes that a promotion’s success should be measured by its long-term impact, not just immediate sales.

“If a brand is recruiting shoppers heavily and then losing them to the next offer on the shelf, it’s funding a cycle rather than building a base,” Gilding said.

The report highlights that 42% of shoppers aged 35 to 44 frequently switch brands due to promotions. Additionally, 81% of respondents stated that price has become a more critical factor in purchasing decisions compared to the previous year.

Shop ANZ GM Carla Bridge points out that effective promotional strategies go beyond mere spending. “The brands getting the most from promotional investment aren’t necessarily the ones spending the most. They’re the ones making the same value proposition easy to recognize wherever the shopper meets it,” she said.

Retailers face the challenge of balancing short-term promotions with long-term loyalty-building. While discounts attract customers, maintaining relationships requires a thoughtful approach.

Bridge highlights the importance of consistency across all touchpoints. “Australian shoppers may find an offer through a website, app, catalogue, email or social media, but it still gets validated at the shelf,” she said. This consistency is vital for retailers to succeed.

The report suggests that retailers must adapt their strategies to meet the changing demands of consumers. By focusing on long-term loyalty and consistent messaging, they can differentiate themselves in a competitive market.

Price sensitivity among consumers has increased, with 81% prioritizing it more than before. This shift shows the need for retailers to offer value beyond just discounts.

As the retail environment evolves, the ability to create a cohesive and recognizable brand experience will be key. Retailers that master this balance will likely thrive in the face of growing competition and shifting consumer preferences.

The findings from Shop ANZ and Vypr provide valuable insights into consumer behavior. By understanding these trends, retailers can develop strategies that support both immediate sales and lasting loyalty.

In summary, while discounts remain a powerful tool, retailers must also focus on building long-term relationships. Consistency, value, and adaptability will be key to success in this dynamic market.

The report concludes that retailers who effectively handle these challenges will be better positioned to retain customers and drive sustainable growth. As consumer expectations continue to evolve, staying ahead of these trends will be essential for retailers aiming to thrive in the Australian market.
